Richard Garvey came to California in 1858 and served as a United States Army mail rider before and during the beginning of
the Civil War. Garvey, one of the early developers of Los Angeles, subdivided his property and sold the parcels to pay his
debt. Garvalia, Calif., now located in San Gabriel, was named for Garvey.
