Compiled and written by the Northern California Writers' Project of the Work Projects Administration. Administrators involved
during the project were George Whitmore, Paul C. Johnson, Walter McElroy, William R. Lawson, and Willis G. Foster. Work on
this project led Erwin Gustav Gudde to do further research and in 1949 to publish the book "California Place Names: A Geographical
Dictionary".
