Robert McE. Hunter scrapbook and papers, 1862-1930
Creator/Contributor:
Hunter, Robert McE., creator
Abstract:
Collection contains copies of Hunter's published articles and letters to the editor, correspondence, ephemera, and printed
pamphlets from organizations he was involved with. Items from his life in Liverpool (bulk 1870's-1880's) include writings
about English politics, income tax, London and Liverpool public affairs, free trade, public libraries and museums, church
issues, and the International Arbitration Association. Items from California (bulk 1890's-1920's) continue these themes, as
represented in articles in local Berkeley, Oakland, and San Francisco newspapers, and others. Letters written home and published
in English papers compare life in Liverpool to his new life in California in detail, with prices, working conditions, jobs,
etc. noted. Additional California topics present are "Boys Brigade" youth clubs, strikes, unemployment, the 1894 election,
peace and the role of the church, temperance, prohibition, progressive tax reform, the single tax movement, etc. A small amount
of family correspondence and items relating to his brother George (Burton?) Hunter are also present.
