Richard Realf was an abolitionist, poet and lecturer. During the Civil War he served in the 88th Illinois Infantry. Sophie M. Smith (Leonard) began writing to Realf, addressed to his pseudonym Richard Rolfe, responding to an advertisement in the newspaper asking for young women to write to soldiers on the front.
