Abstract:
Four journals that document the early life and overland journey to the California gold fields of Royal T. Sprague. Vol. 1
begins on Sprague's 21st birthday and concerns his teaching experiences in Potsdam, N.Y. and Zanesville, Ohio. Vol. 2 begins
on Mar. 19, 1849, the day Sprague leaves Zanesville, heading to California via the Applegate Trail. This vol. also includes
a daily meteorological record for 1851. Vols. 3-4 continue Sprague's daily notations, concluding on Apr. 11, 1852, shortly
before he returned to Ohio to bring his family to Calif. The final vol. also includes school lessons and vocabulary exercises
for Sprague's son, Arthur Hale Sprague, 1861-1862.

Royal Tyler Sprague was born Jan. 23, 1814 in New Haven, Vt. He taught elementary school in Potsdam, N.Y., and later opened
and operated a private school in Zanesville, Ohio. In 1838, he began the study of law and was admitted to the Ohio bar. On
Mar. 19, 1849, he set out for California, leaving his family in Zanesville. He arrived in Reading's Springs (now Shasta in
Shasta County), Calif. on Oct. 14, 1849, and established a law practice there. In 1852, Sprague returned to Ohio and brought
his family to Shasta by way of the Isthmus of Panama. He was elected 21st Justice of the Supreme Court of California in 1867
and became Chief Justice on Jan. 1, 1872, an office he held until his death on Feb. 24, 1872.
