Abstract:
Photograph albums, snapshot photographs and studio portraits depicting mulitple generations of the Woolsey family of Berkeley,
Calif. The central figures depicted throughout collection are William Harold Woolsey and Mary Catherine Woolsey and their
children William Harold "Bill" Woolsey, Jr. and Sally Woolsey Young. Collection also depicts W.H. Woolsey's parents William
Edgar Woolsey and his wife Rosa Livingstone Woolsey; and his siblings Frances Woolsey Robson and Florence Woolsey Heidt and
their families; as well as family members of earlier and later generations. Other subjects depicted include the Stanford
Vina Ranch in Tehama County (including a 1939 aerial photograph of the property); early views of Berkeley; Woolsey family
residences in Berkeley, Sonoma County and elsewhere; grounds of the Shattuck Hotel; Berkeley High School students and scenes;
the University of California, Berkeley; the U.C. Berkeley Glee Club; Y.M.C.A. activities; leisure outings and travel to such
locations as Yosemite Valley and other areas in the Sierra Nevada, Japan, Alaska, Vancouver, Santa Rosa, and Carmel; the 1915
Panama Pacific International Exposition; and construction of Angel Island and the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition;
and the Kentucky Military Institute (attended by W.H. Woolsey, Jr.).

William Edgar Woolsey was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1854 to Ezra Woodhull and Martha Ann Woolsey. The E.W. Woolsey family
moved to California in 1868, renting homes and land in Oakland and Berkeley until 1877 when they purchased 200 acres in Sonoma
County, nine miles from the city of Santa Rosa. W.E. Woolsey graduated from Oakland High School and attended the University
of California, Berkeley (then the College of California) for three years. W.E. Woolsey married Rosa Livingstone (born 1861)
the niece of Francis Kittredge and Rosa Morse Shattuck in 1884. W.E. and Rosa Woolsey had three children: Mrs. Florence May
Heidt (born 1893), Mrs. Frances Shattuck Robson (born 1885), and William Harold Woolsey (born 1900). W.H. Woolsey attend
Berkeley High School and the University of California, Berkeley (class of 1924). W.H. Woolsey took charge of the family ranch
in Vina, California, formerly the Leland Stanford Ranch. He also managed the Woolsey family land corporation, Woolsey, Robson,
and Heidt. (Frederick T. Robson and Horace Heidt were his brothers-in-law). W.H. Woolsey and his wife, Mary Catherine Woolsey
née Hart (born 1897) had two children: William Harold Woolsey, Jr. (born 1931) and Mrs. Sally Young (born 1929).
