Title:
[Panorama of the foreign settlement, Kobe, Japan]
Fisher-Merriam family papers
Fisher-Merriam family photographs
Abstract:
360 degree panorama, from a rooftop, of neighborhood near harbor with colonial architecture. Young planted trees line the
streets. Rickshaws and occasional human figures are visible in largely empty streets. Tile workers are on some rooftops. A
British flag flies on the bund near the harbor. Mountains are visible in background. Location identified as Kobe, Japan, based
on identification of building at center (4th and 5th photographic plates) as No. 15, the United States Consulate building
built circa 1880. Characters on a building in the second plate from the right read "No. 82", and the location corresponds
to lot 82 of the foreign settlement as identified in early maps.
