Abstract:
Photograph album of snapshots documenting activities of the 3rd Infantry Regiment of the Minnesota National Guard at Camp
Llano Grande, near Mercedes, Texas, where they trained to participate in the Pancho Villa Expedition following Villa's raid
on Columbus, New Mexico of March 9, 1916. Snapshots, taken by a member of the Guard, include individual and group portraits
of soldiers, field exercises, leisure and recreation activities, camp views (tents and permanent structures, trenches, vehicles,
Minnehana Theatre, Minnesota Point Confectionery, etc.), regional flora and fauna, and town views (perhaps Mercedes or Brownsville?).
Also includes a small group of commercial real photo postcards pertaining to the U.S. Army's 13th Cavalry Regiment stationed
near Columbus, New Mexico, under the command of Colonel Herbert Jermain Slocum. Some postcard images predate the Battle of
Columbus, others document the raid's aftermath, depicting Slocum, Columbus mayor William Christopher Hoover, ruins of the
town, a pile of bodies to be cremated, a captured Mexican spy, various scenes of troops, a view of the Columbus stockyards,
and the 13th Cavalry military band. Also includes a panoramic group portrait of a U.S. Army (?) Wagon Company, posing on horseback
and in wagons; at far left of image a soldier holds a flag: "Wagon Company 31".
