Paula S. Fass was born in West Germany in 1947 and was educated at Barnard College and Columbia University. A social and cultural
historian, she was the Margaret Byrne Professor of History at UC Berkeley for 36 years, focusing on the history of children,
family, education, and immigration. She is also the author of numerous books on these topics. In 2011 she published her family's
story of life in Poland during the Holocaust and her personal experience as a child of Holocaust survivors. From 2007-2009
Fass acted as President of the Society for the History of Children and Youth. After her retirement from the University of
California, Berkeley she was Distinguished Visitor in Residence at Rutgers University from 2010-2013.
