Title:
[Photograph album of Alaska Natives]
Abstract:
Photograph album and other photographs, possibly taken and/or collected by a missionary, documenting their life in the midst
of various tribes and villages of the Tlingit and perhaps other indigenous peoples in Alaska. Groups and/or their villages
identified in captions include Klawock, Haines, Sitka, Wrangell, Suquan and "Killisnoo Indians". Other locations depicted
include Juneau and Forester Island. A few indigenous persons are identified (e.g. Klawock Chief Gunyah; Charlie Green, interpreter;
"Josie"; "Walter"; "Indian Doctor"), but most are unidentified. Includes some candid views of indigenous peoples eating, washing,
boating, gardening and setting up camp, and some posing for informal portraits (including a group of Killisnoo in traditional
ceremonial attire). Also depicted are examples of indigenous material culture such as totem poles, dancing masks, blankets
and statuary; and decorated houses, including that of the head Chief of the Sitka tribe and a Tlingit house (with added caption
of the title of a Presbyterian periodical "Home Mission Monthly"). Other subjects include views of the residence of the photographer/compiler
(described as "our house"); a Presbyterian church in Juneau; Johnny Skan, a Salvation Army "leader"; the steamer boat "Farallon";
and non-indigenous persons associated with the activities of the photographer/compiler
