Abstract:

Collection chiefly consists of photographs taken from ca. 1910 to 2001. Images depict poet and Buddhist monk Philip Whalen throughout his life, as well as various family members, friends and associates. Also pictured are various locations where Whalen lived and visited. Among the individuals pictured are Gary Snyder, Allen Ginsberg and Michael McClure. Also appearing in photographs are Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Peter Orlovsky, Jerome Rothenberg, William S. Burroughs, Anne Waldman, Charles Olson, Robert Creeley, Robert Duncan, Denise Levertov, Shunryu Suzuki and Issan Dorsey. The collection includes some illustrated manuscript poems (2003.218--AX), 2 abstract pastel drawings by Whalen (2003.218--fALB), 1 portrait of Whalen by Jack Kerouac titled "Buddha Red Ears" (2003.218--ffALB), and a painted portrait of Whalen by Michael McClure executed in an abstract drip style (2003.218--I). Also present are 2 copies of a broadside, printed by Andrew Hoyem in 1977, of the poem "A lesson in limits", by Michael Rothenberg (2003.218--B).
