Abstract:
Personal photographs, sketchbooks and miscellaneous drawings, photographs documenting Packard's work, her association with
Diego Rivera, and her efforts to preserve and restore Rivera's fresco murals in the San Francisco Bay Area. PIC box 1 contains
miscellaneous drawn and painted sketches of various subjects (landscapes, animals, children, trees, etc.) and sketchbooks
pertaining to particular topics (sprout pickers, a Hawaiian motif, portraits, agriculture and farming, cows, logging, etc.).
PIC box 2 contains photographic prints pertaining to various subjects: Emmy Lou Packard, her family, friends and associates;
Packard's mural in the Polynesian Club of the S.S. Mariposa; miscellaneous artwork of Packard and other artists; frescoes
by Diego Rivera located in the San Francisco Bay Area ("Pan American Unity" mural painted at the Golden Gate International
Exposition, later relocated to San Francisco City College; the San Francisco Art Institute mural; and a small fresco "Still
life and blossoming almond trees" made in the Atherton home of Rosalie Stern, later relocated to Stern Hall, University of
California, Berkeley); other works by Diego Rivera; photographs of Rivera and Frida Kahlo by Packard and Ansel Adams; Rivera's
assistant Albert Barrows; sculptor Dudley Carter; and photographs by Dorothea Lange and Imogen Cunningham. PIC box 3 contains
papers pertaining to Packard's research on Rivera's fresco "Allegory of California" (made at the City Club of San Francisco
Stock Exchange tower, completed 1931) and the San Francisco Art Institute mural (also completed 1931) and associated restoration
efforts. AX box 1 contains original art and photographic prints: sketchbooks and drawings by Packard; photographs of Packard
taken by Lee Romero of the San Francisco Examiner; photographs of miscellaneous and unidentified murals, sculpture, etc.;
photographs pertaining to Rivera's frescoes "Allegory of California", "Pan American Unity" and his mural in the Palacio Nacional,
Mexico City; photographs of Frida Kahlo by Packard; photograph of circus performers by Packard; photograph of Dudley Carter
by Emmanuel Montoya; and photograph "Kansas City" by George Olson. LAN box 1 contains 35mm slides pertaining to various subjects:
Packard's studios and galleries; her travels to the Soviet bloc in 1965; Don Beatty photographs of Packard's works; prints
and paintings by Packard; Diego Rivera's frescoes in the San Francisco Bay area, and other works by the artist; and the Coit
Tower mural. Oversize folder (C) contains 2 drawings: studies of a bird of prey (falcon?), and a plant. Most negatives depict
details of various Diego Rivera murals: NEG box 1: personal photographs and photographs of paintings by Frida Kahlo; NEG boxes
2-3 and NEG (8x10) box 1: details of Diego Rivera murals; NEG portfolio: miscellaneous images (landscapes, Packard artworks,
