Philip Brown was born in England in March 1836. He immigrated to the United States in 1860 and settled in San Francisco, California,
where he worked as a stevedore. He was married to Katherine (Kate) M. Perry and they raised several children at their home
at 228 Filbert Street in San Francisco.
