Abstract:
Satirical political cartoons, most published in periodicals, pertaining to Denis Kearney, the Workingmen's Party of California,
and anti-Chinese sentiment in San Francisco. Illustrations are from various sources, including Harper's Weekly ("The ides
of March", March 20, 1880; Social Science Solved, 'Eureka! Eureka!'..." April 10, 1880; and "Another man that trembles for
our Republican form of government, Denis Kearney", April 24, 1880), Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper ("California - Attempted
assassination of Rev. I.S. Kalloch, Workingmen's candidate for Mayor...", September 18, 1879; and "California - The anti-Chinese
agitation of San Francisco: a meeting of the Workingmen's Party on the sand lots", March 20, 1880), Puck ("The Chinese invasion",
undated) and The Wasp ("Science and religion reconciled at last", undated). Also includes a print by I.N. Choynski, "The tables
turned: you sabe him? Kealney must go!" (believed to have been printed in 1877 or 1878). Some illustrations are accompanied
by other pages from the same issues. Other topics of prints include California Constitution of 1879, and Charles de Young's
shooting of I.S. Kalloch in San Francisco in 1879, and shows at the Metropolitan Temple.
