Contains three letters concerning the murder of Samuel N. Chambers in New Mexico on May 31, 1880 by Apache Indians led by Victorio, to his relatives in Spencer, Indiana. The letters give details about the circumstances of his death and four others, S.J. Lyons, Station Keeper at Fort Cummings, Larson and Hildebrand, freighters from Pueblo "Veajo", and a Mexican man who worked for Lyons. The letters provide information about the attack and disposition of Chamber's remains and his belongings. His body was recovered and buried at Fort Cummings. A watch and cash he was carrying was stolen and the rest of his belongings, a pasteboard valise and some papers, were to be sent back to Indiana. Two of the letters are on letterhead stationery of the National Mail and Transportation Company and signed by O.R. Smyth, Superintendant. One of the letters is signed by J.E. Long, general manager of the company, on behalf of O.R. Smyth. Includes typescript transcriptions.
