Knight, Ambrose.

Abstract:

Nathaniel Knight writes to Ambrose Knight (May 6, 1871) about a former employee of Ambrose's finding work among Nathaniel's aquaintances, about health and illnesses, farm work and crops. He describes a fire in detail, which damanged a number of buildings in downtown Folsom, for which he blames a certain man. In his letter of July 2, Nathaniel identifies the arsonist as a Mr. Bugby who he believes set fire to his "wine house" to collect fire insurance (most of the other buildings damaged were also insured.) He goes on to describe a more recent fire which damaged Chinatown, the lumber yard, and other areas. Religious matters occupy a significant portion of the letter in which he describes local churches, offers his views on the "man made excitement" of church revivals, and other issues. He also writes about his vegetable garden, murders, members of the household, the social climate in Calaveras, and encourages Ambrose to come and visit soon, even for just one night.
