Collection included personal correspondence, including letters from Mirov's mother in the Soviet Union during the 1930s, other
family correspondence, professional correspondence, a manuscript of Mirov's autobiography, and other professional papers.
The collection also includes photo albums documenting Mirov's life in Russia and the Soviet Union (dating from the 1910s)
and his years in San Francisco. Photos in these albums include snapshots of his mother, father, wives, and children. One photo
album documents the family of Mirov's first wife, Mia.

Nicholas Tiho Mirov was born in Siberia in 1893. He earned his B.S. at the Institute of Forestry in St. Petersburg in 1916
and immigrated to the the United States by way of Manchuria in the early 1920s. Mirov was awarded a PhD in Plant Pathology
from the University of California in 1936. He was the first plant physiologist appointed by the United States Forest Service
and served in this capacity at the Institute of Forest Genetics for thirty years. Mirov was the world's leading expert on
the chemistry of the pine tree and was awarded a silver medal for outstanding achievement from the United States Department
of Agriculture. For fifteen years, Mirov also lectured in Soviet geography at the University of California and even wrote
his own textbook for this course.
