Abstract:

Holograph, signed, 220 pages, written for his family, as he explains in the Oct. 19 entry, an "epiloque." Experiences prospecting for gold at Spanish Bar and later at Murderer's Bar, with information about various methods of mining; impressions of various towns he visited; information about construction of miners' cabins, social activities, religious practices, drinking, gambling, etc.; description of Whig Convention at Coloma; arrival in San Francisco in June as delegate to convention; appointment as inspector of customs, San Francisco; description of fire, June 22; activities of Vigilance Committee; crime in San Francisco and elsewhere; arrival and departure of ships; local and state politics; amusements and activities in San Francisco.
