Collection Overview

Title:

[Michiko Fujita photograph album of Japanese Americans in the 1940s]

Creator/Contributor:

Fujita, Michiko, creator, creator.

Abstract:

Chiefly snapshots, with several portraits, richly documenting Japanese American life shortly before and during the Second World War. Compiled by Michiko Fujita, a young woman living with her family in California, the album depicts everyday activities, travels, family, friends and associates. Pre-war highlights include a family visit to Hawaii; scenes on board the Japanese liner Tatsuta Maru (later renamed Tatuta Maru) en route from San Francisco to Japan, likely in 1940; scenes from Miyajima and Kusatsu, Japan; and harbor and street scenes of San Francisco. Also well-documented is Michiko's life during her family's wartime internment at Poston, Arizona war relocation center. Also included are a few scenes of the war relocation center at Heart Mountain, Wyoming. Other subjects include scenes taken at Sequoia National Park and studio portraits of Japanese, many in traditional attire. A group portrait of Woodlake Union High School class of 1942 graduates, including Michiko Fujita, indicates the compiler's place of residence (Woodlake, Tulare County, Calif.) prior to her family's relocation.
