Letters and documents of Isaac T. Mott and his son-in-law, Alexis W. von Schmidt, relating primarily to litigation involving
Johnson's Rancho in Yuba County in the 1850s and to von Schmidt's survey work. Included are copies or drafts of letters written
by them; letters (some copies) from John Bidwell, Eugene F. Gillespie, Stephen J. Field, John A. Sutter, Aaron A. Sargent,
Caleb Cushing, Charles H. Hoyt and others; documents relating to the land case involving the Rancho; papers relating to von
Schmidt's work on the California boundary survey, 1853-1857, and three survey notebooks, one of which also contains his journal
for a Sierra trip, 1856; miscellaneous financial and legal papers, etc.; and Edward A. von Schmidt's survey transit notebook,
1874.
