The collection includes letters sent to Margaret Cooper while she was living and studying at U.C. Berkeley in the 1950s. The primary correspondents are her mother, Helen Cooper; her father, Lyle Cooper, a labor organizer for the United Packinghouse Workers of America; and her friend Marian Ybarra. The cassette tapes contain recordings of interviews and meetings with farm workers in California, Idaho, Oregon, Washington and Texas, recorded between 1973 and 1977 and conducted by Margaret Aseman Cooper Zonligt and her husband Martin J. Zonligt.

Margaret Aseman Cooper Zonligt (1928-2010) was a farm labor activist and photographer in the Central Valley of California. She studied with Paul Schuster Taylor, receiving a master's degree in economics from U.C. Berkeley in 1954. She married Martin Zonligt in 1968. Martin Julius Zonligt (1934-2012) was born in Belgium. He recieved his master's degree in library science from U.C. Berkeley and worked as a librarian at the Stanislaus County Library for over 25 years. He specialized in providing outreach to migrant workers and other underserved populations.
