According to the Johan Hagemeyer business records (BANC MSS C-G 272), Shawl sat for Hagemeyer in the photographer's studio
in 1929 and 1944. Notations on portraits of Hagemeyer taken at these times (found in BANC PIC 1964.063--PIC) suggest that
Shawl may have photographed Hagemeyer during these visits.

Louis Shawl (1905-1998) was a graphic designer who attended and taught at California College of Arts and Crafts. He was a
partner in the design team Shawl, Nyeland and Seavey, served as manager of the Graphic Communications unit of Walter Landor
Associates, and was a founding member of both the San Francisco Advertising Club and the Art Directors and Artists Club of
San Francisco. Duirng the Great Depression Shawl worked as a photographer. He was known to have befriended and studied under
Johan Hagemeyer.
