Abstract:
Two handwritten letters addressed to Jones P. Veazie in Bangor, Maine, from persons traveling aboard ships in the Pacific
containing details of their trips, conditions on ship, and observations of ship traffic and the market for commodities in
California. One letter (4 p.) is from W.N. Young, dated December 28, 1849, aboard a ship off the coast of Valparaiso, Chile
on the way to San Francisco, Calif. Young describes a long tedious ocean passage of 128 days and gives other details of ship
life. The other letter (4 p.) is from James [?] Martin, dated May 16, 1851, aboard the ship Brant in Honolulu, Sandwich Islands
(i.e. Hawaii). Martin describes difficult conditions on the ship battling sickness, fever, and mosquitos. He also gives details
of ship traffic and market conditions for various commodites in San Francisco.
