Abstract:
Ephemera, correspondence, and other materials relating to California prisons, the Tom Mooney case, Black history and the Ku
Klux Klan. Also includes a box of letters and cards sent to Charles Manson following an incident in 1984 in which Manson was
set on fire by a fellow inmate at the California Medical Facilty in Vacaville.
Prison ephemera, prison related correspondence, prisoner correspondence, prisoner artwork on cards and envelopes, souvenir
prison postcards, articles, a death row inmate autobiographical account of Jacob Oppenheimer, miscellany, etc., mostly concerning
prisons in the United States. Includes one postcard with handrawn art from a German prisoner of war being held in Canada (1943).
Also includes two newspapers devoted to prison topics, The Youth Companion (March 12, 1885), and Prison Focus (Winter 1999).
Also includes one copy of the Columbian Centinel (February 18, 1824), a newsletter, McQuillon's Corner (2004), and a community
newsprint publication about Massachusetts prison life featuring prisoner's writings (1972?). Oversize items include wall calendars
from San Quentin Prison (1991, 1994-1995) and Pelican Bay Prison (1995), prisoner artwork depicting a group meeting, and a
poster (1978?) protesting solitary confinement in Canada.
