Abstract:
Contains 30 letters written by Joshua Spriggs to his 2-year-old grandson Eddie Leroy Tigh about his time in California and
Oregon. The letters describe his account by sea through Panama to San Francisco, the harbor and city of San Francisco including
the Chinese Quarter, he describes the people he comes across including many Native Americans in California and Oregon recounting
many of their legends and their experience with alcohol, he describes gold mining in California as well as a friend's account
of mining in Australia, farming and ranching in California and Oregon and crime including the account of a bank robber from
Chicago and the story of criminal Joaquin Murieta.
