James H. Gardner was born in South Carolina on March 16, 1810. After serving as a senator in South Carolina, he emigrated
to California. He worked the gold fields of the Sierra and invested in San Francisco real estate and later settled in Sausalito.
He died on May 22, 1889.
Virginie Thouvenin was born in France on June 11, 1826. She was married first to Henry Moeller. On August 6, 1868 she married
her second husband, Sen. James H. Gardner. She died on October 28, 1919 in San Rafael, California.
