The Jewish Council of 1933, Inc. was created by a group of refugees from Nazi Germany in San Francisco to reaffirm their faith
in democracy and to help each other acclimate and assimilate. It also instituted a "Sterbekasse" to provide death benefits
to the families of members. The Council, with 1,300 members in 1947, sponsored debates and activities that reflected its commitment
to fighting antisemitism and racism. The group dissolved in 1978.
