Contains a handwritten journal of Joel Grover(8 pages) with dated entries from May 9-July 15, 1851 for an overland journey from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, west towards California, and points along the Platte River Road through Nebraska, Fort Laramie and western Wyoming. Grover was accompanied by three companions. The entries contain descriptions of the pararies, other emigrants they encountered and several difficult river crossings. On July 13, he estimates they have traveled about 650 miles. The final entry on July 15 finds them leaving the Platte River Road for "the old road" which is described as "a good road to Clear Creek." It is unknown how much farther the group went. Other materials include a military order dated October 15, 1864, directing Grover to commence a scouting trip, co-signed by the camp commander of the 3rd Regiment Kansas State Militia, Major Joseph E. Riggs, and the Acting Adjutant, Edward Davis Thompson. Other documents include a manuscript map of the area around Fort Leavenworth, lists of supplies, a timeline of historical "remarkable events", and a contract for another trip from Cedar Rapids to Oregon in 1853.
