Abstract:

Manuscript of Jedediah S. Smith's "transcript journal" (1822, 1827-1828) in the hand of Samuel Parkman, and with notes concerning the manuscript by Dale L. Morgan. Transcript journal describes journey up the Missouri River in 1822; return from the first visit to California, 1827; second journey to California; experiences at Mission San Jose, Monterey and San Francisco; trapping in the Central Valley and up the coast of California and Oregon.
Correspondence and other papers (25 items), including a letter by Austin Smith (1831) describing the death of J.S. Smith, an unsigned copy of a letter to Alexander Doniphan (1831), two brief sketches on Western history by John M. Smith, and a note by I.G. Smith.
