Julius Palffy-Alpar was born in Hunyard-Kristyor, Transylvania, which was then part of Hungary, on May 19, 1908. He graduated
from the Toldi Miklos Royal Hungarian Sports Institute in 1935 and became a professor of physical education and fencing at
the Hungarian Military Academy in Budapest. He was a faculty member in the Department of Physical Education at the University
of California, Berkeley from 1962-1975. Palffy-Alpar taught Marcel Marceau how to fence and the two became friends.
