Abstract:
Collection of letters between Juan B. Cantua and his attorney Hamilton Gay Howard relate to Cantua's efforts to revive his
grandfather Vincente Cantua's claim for reimbursement for property (horses, cattle, guns, and supplies) taken by the United
States Army in Calif., under the command of Gen. John C. Fremont, in 1846 and 1847. This claim had been investigated by the
War Claims Department in 1854 but was not resolved. The letters and documents also pertain to an unpaid mortgage deed to the
family's Rancho Nacional, and other matters regarding the will of V. Cantua. In one letter Cantua advises Howard on a mine
in Sonora, Mexico. Others discuss financial terms under which Howard is to pursue Cantua's claim. Legal documents include
a typescript of V. Cantua's will of 1853, the brief filed by Howard with the Judge-Advocate-General's response, a brief on
contest for an administrator of V. Cantua's estate, as well as notes apparently made by Howard for his own use in pursuing
Cantua's claim.
