Title:
[Honma Lizo photograph album documenting wartime service of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team's anti-tank company]
Creator/Contributor:
Lizo, Honma, creator, photographer.
Abstract:
Album of photographs compiled by a member of the anti-tank company of the 442nd Infantry Regiment during his service in the
Second World War, chiefly in France and Italy. The Japanese-American soldiers of the company and its activities are extensively
documented. Includes a wide range of non-combat activities of the unit during various European maneuvers, as well as numerous
scenes of the soldiers during off-duty and leisure moments. Two prominent operations suggested by the imagery include the
company's participation in the August 1944 invasion of southern France and the October 1944 rescue of the "Lost Battalion"
(1st Battalion, 141st Regiment of the 36th "Texas" Division) near Biffontaine, France. Other identified locations in France
include Nice, Marseilles and the area near Menton between late 1944 and early 1945. Identified locations in Italy include
Genoa, Livorno and Pisa. Many locations are not identified. Images are chiefly snapshots, with several portraits of Lizo's
fellow infantrymen. Also icludes a few views of the Jerome Relocation Center, a wartime internment camp for Japanese-Americans,
in Denson, Arkansas. Lizo is depicted throughout the album. Also includes a copy of a 2001 letter written to Lizo from Robert
Kenner Films, thanking him for his contribution to a PBS documentary on soldiers.
