Contains several full copies, drafts, and portions of an unpublished autobiography of the life of a California engineer who
lived through the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire. Topics include recollections of his family's migration to California,
a business relationship with the Hudson's Bay Company, their early settlement in Oregon and Washington, theatre events in
the San Francisco Bay Area, his engineering studies and work career as a civil engineer for San Francisco Bay Area water companies
and as University Engineer at the University of California, Berkeley, and a detailed account of his experiences during and
after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire. The various versions have original materials inserted into them throughout
including maps of San Francisco, photographs, cards, and correspondence. Most of the finished copies are signed by Herbert
B. Foster on October 24, 1955. One copy has an addendum note signed by Foster sometime after 1965. Other related materials
include a blueprint of water sterilizing equipment at Lake Temescal for People's Water Company, Oakland, California, a complete
set of five rotogravure supplements to The San Francisco Examiner published shortly after the 1906 earthquake depicting the
extent of damage, and a scrapbook of ephemera, clippings, cards, and photographs of family members and friends.
