Title:
Historical California images and miscellaneous art works from the Thomas W. Norris collection
Abstract:
Images largely relating to California history, including historic buildings and events, early settlement, etc. Many are reproduction
prints or proofs of prints apparently for book illustrations or for Norris's annual holiday greeting, for which he reproduced
early images from his own collection. Subject based files (PIC box) are: Los Angeles (with oversized in B), mining districts
(with oversized in AX and B), missions (with oversized in AX), Monterey and vicinity (with oversized in AX and B), Oakland,
Sacramento, San Francisco (with oversized in AX and B), Santa Barbara (with oversized in B), San Luis Obispo, Santa Clara
County and San Jose, Solano County, Sonoma County, Stockton, and miscellaneous or unidentified California views (with oversized
in B). Also present (PIC box) are two etchings by Carl Oscar Borg: a portrait and a view of classical ruins. Photographs
of note include an albumen print of a Stockton view, copied by photographer J. Pitcher Spooner from an original daguerreotype
by William H. Rulofson, the original of which is in the Weber family collection of The Bancroft Library. Also of note are
several good quality views of the Baldwin Hotel fire of 1898 on Market Street in San Francisco. Overized material (size AX),
in addition to that noted above, includes two maritime watercolors by F.H. dated 1833 and 1834, a pencil drawing of Mission
Dolores in San Francisco circa 1850, six pencil sketches of homes or farm buildings or other structures some of which may
be in California, a watercolor of a tree, and numerous drawings of floral arrangements.
