Horace Whitaker was born in Hampton, Connecticut, 1830 and died in Orsi, California, 1910. He moved to California in 1850
and became a rancher in Tulare County. Before his death he donated 320 acres of a sequoia and conifer forest, adjacent to
Sequoia National Park, to the University of California. This stand has become known as Whitaker's Forest.
