Abstract:

Contains 24 letters written to Collin's from various friends from Mt. Vernon, Iowa, now living in Calif., including Peter McDouall and C.P. Twiss. The letters discuss borax mining, saw mills, railroad right of way, the hot springs, weather and fires in Sonoma County, grizzly bears, farming, education, Native Americans, the 1868 San Francisco earthquake, and a visit with George B. Bowman, founder of Cornell College.

Henry A. Collin, resident of Mount Vernon, Iowa, arrived there in 1856 from Columbia County, N.Y.
Peter McDouall, born in Scotland, when he came of age he emigrated to Pennsylvania, where he met his wife Sarah Lang. They moved to Iowa in 1852 then to California in 1867. In Santa Rosa, Calif. he had a merchandise business and for a short time he also owned land in Los Angeles County, but soon returned to Santa Rosa. In 1882 he moved to Washington State where he died in 1886.
C.P. Twiss, a Kansan, emigrated to California in 1867, owned a farm in San Jose and land in Los Angeles County adjacent to McDouall's. In the early 1880's he moved to Washington State where he was involved in politics.
