Abstract:

Contains correspondence and other papers and printed materials, with a detailed index, concerning Helen Haines' career as a librarian specializing in book selection, a book review columnist, and an instructor at the Los Angeles Public Library, Library School. Includes general information about the school, course notes, and Haines' articles, book reviews, and other writings, as well as clippings and printed materials she collected about librarians and various literary figures.
Haines' correspondence also contains personal letters between Haines and pertaining to her close friends, Edith G. Hawthorne and Julian Hawthorne, including description of Edith's financial struggles at the time of his death. Other personal papers include calendar diaries, an autobiographical sketch, and a few miscellaneous papers and clippings.
