Portraits, snapshots and postcards pertaining to the life, family and career of Harry Beal Torrey. Includes many nineteenth
century cartes de visite and cabinet card portraits. Photographs depict Torrey's student years at Oakland High School and
the University of California, Berkeley; his career and activities at Reed College and other locations in Oregon; and his family,
colleagues, friends and associates. Especially well-documented is Torrey's 1906 voyage to the Aleutian Islands, Russia and
Japan on the U.S.S. Albatross and a 1907-08 visit to Tahiti and Sumatra. Also includes views of Beaufort (North Carolina),
Columbia University and New York City taken during a visit in 1900, and Friday Harbor (Wash.) taken during an outing ca. 1915.
A number of pictures of automobiles from 1910-1920 are also present. Also includes contrasting views of U.C. Berkeley's Ben
Weed's Amphitheater and the Greek Theatre which was later built on the same site.

Torrey was on the faculty of U.C. Berkeley, 1895-1912, and Prof. of Biology at Reed College, Oregon, 1912-20. He was also
on the faculty of the University of Oregon, Stanford University, and involved with numerous institutions related to experimental
biology, zoology, and medicine.
