Horace H. Emerson diary and letters : mss. and ALS, 1854-1910 (bulk 1854-1858)

Creator/Contributor:

Emerson, Horace H., creator

Abstract:

Pocket diary (24 p.) gives a brief account of Emerson's trip from Bonus, Boone County, Ill. by steamer to St. Joseph and then driving cattle to California in 1854. Letters (1855-58) to his future wife Mary Tibbets written from Oroville, Grass Valley, Patterson, Spring Creek, and Dry Creek describe crossing the plains and details of life in the mines, He also writes of homes of cloth and poor cooking, theft of their mining ground in Oroville, the murder rate and hangings, availability of water, and washing away mountains to get gold resulting in deterioration of the rivers. Emerson promises frequently that he is not in Calif. to get rich, and that he only plans to stay until he earns enough to buy a farm in Ill. Later letters (1873-1874) written after his return to Ill. are addressed to his wife and children from a prospecting and cattle driving trip to New Mexico and Colorado. Letters (1910) to his son R.W. Emerson in Managua, Nicaragua report on life at home on the farm. Also includes Emerson's certificates of marriage to Mary Tibbets, 1859 and Eleanor E. Kent, 1899.
