Abstract:

History of the 1st Regiment of New York Volunteers in the Mexican War is preceded by autobiographical material about the childhood of Francis E. Pinto. His reminiscences describe his decision to go to California with his future brother-in-law John Laimbeer, their voyage on the steamers Isthmus and Panama and arrival in San Francisco on Feb. 28, 1849 aboard the Panama, the first steamer to enter the harbor. Later Pinto tells of his trip via Stockton to the mines at Carson's Hill, life there and its hardships, and his job as provisioner for his mining partners. Going into business in 1850 with his friend Martin Waterman resulted in the establishment of a firm selling supplies to the miners, known in Stockton as Pinto, Jordan and Co. and in San Francisco as Waterman, Jordan and Co., which enjoyed success in marketing goods as well as losses due to fires and other hazards. Includes Pinto's activities with the Vigilance Committee in San Francisco, and transcriptions of related documents.
Also includes Genealogical Study of the Carleton and Pinto Families with allied branches in America... by George Stanton Rose, 1963.
