Abstract:

Chiefly portrait photographs documenting multiple generations of the Hamlin family descended from Francis Hamlin and his wife Eliza Thrasher Hamlin. Individuals depicted include Francis and Eliza Hamlin, their daughter Augusta Thrasher Hamlin and her husband Lloyd C. Ashley; Francis' grandson Robert Ashley; and many other extended family members. PIC box 1 contains a few portraits of Francis and Eliza Hamlin, Augusta and Lloyd Ashley and their children; many portraits and snapshots pertaining to Robert Ashley; and other portraits of Ashley and Thrasher family members and unidentified persons. Volume 1 contains chiefly 19th century carte de visite portraits, including Francis Hamlin, Eliza Ann Thrasher, Ann Thrasher and Francis' second wife Annis Stevens, and many unidentified persons. Volume 2 contains 19th century carte de visite and tintype portraits pertaining to the Ashley family, including Palmer, Richey, Murphy, McMaster, Beers and Wheeler families. Volume 3 contains 19th century carte de visite portraits pertaining to the Thrasher family, including Ann, Eliza Ann, John C., Augusta and Alonzo. Daguerreotype portraits depict Francis Hamlin, Lide Thrasher (Eliza's sister or niece) and an unidentified woman with two children. AX folder contains a portrait of Robert Ashley and an unidentified large group posing outdoors with rakes and other gardening equipment. Collection also includes a panoramic group portrait (in G folder), perhaps pertaining to Robert Ashley, of aviation cadets of Bombardier Squadron 95, Santa Ana Army Air Base, taken June 16, 1944. Negatives (NNEG box 1) pertain to "Spruce production division, Vancouver Barracks, 1918", Waller Campbell (or Walter Campbell), and unidentified topics.

Francis Hamlin was born in Maine in 1817. He lived and worked as a teacher in Readfield, Maine during the late 1830s and early 1840s. By 1844, Hamlin resided in Moscow, Ohio. He came to California during the Gold Rush in 1849 and settled in the area of Yuba City and Marysville, where he mined for gold. Hamlin moved back east to Ohio around 1851 and returned to California in 1853 with 150 head of cattle to establish himself as a rancher and a businessman in West Butte. By 1879, he reportedly owned around 1600 acres of land. Hamlin was active in public affairs, serving in the state legislature in 1862. He was also appointed an Associate Justice of the Superior Court of Sutter County in 1859 and signed a petition to the state legislature for women's suffrage in 1870. Hamlin married Eliza Ann Thrasher in 1870 and was father to Augusta, born in 1878. After the death of Eliza, Francis Hamlin married Annis Stevens in 1887. Francis Hamlin died in 1902. Augusta Thrasher Hamlin, daughter of Francis and Eliza Ann, married Lloyd C. Ashley in 1903. They had three sons: Robert, Hamlin, and Palmer.
