Gloria Bowles received her BA and MA from the University of Michigan, and her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of California, Berkeley in 1976. She taught at UC Berkeley from 1967 to 1985 and was the founding coordinator of the Women's Studies Program at the university. Bowles served as coordinator from 1976-1983 and was an invaluable advocate for the Program. She was also a member of the Comparative Literature Women's Caucus at the university.
