In 1852, the California Gold Rush brought Prussian-born Michael Gilbert, then thirty years old, to Big Oak Flat, California.
There, he went into business, eventually owned his own store, and became an agent of Wells Fargo. He was also a charter member
and officer in Yosemite Lodge, No. 97, of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. In 1865, he and his family moved to San Francisco.
