The papers include class notes for University of California, Berkeley courses History 4B, 103B, 155B, 156A, and 156B, detailed course handouts, fragments of his one published work, "Politics and Exegesis: Origen and the Two Swords" (U.C. Press, 1979), and a draft of an unpublished Holocaust memoir.

Gerard E. Caspary was born in Frankfurt, Germany, on January 10, 1929 and grew up in Paris. After losing both of his parents in concentration camps in the second World War he emigrated to the United States. He received a B.A from Swarthmore College (1950), followed by an M.A. (1952) and a Ph.D. (1962) from Harvard University. Caspary began teaching medieval intellectual history at the University of California, Berkeley in 1970. He died on April 6, 2008.
