From artist's text, inside cover flap of portfolio: After moving to the Bay Area from Northern California in 1973, I began
to document with regularity a five-block radius centered roughly around what has become known as Victorian Row. I have found
it to be an area full of history and rich in meaning. Somehow, miraculously, a neighborhood remained intact and unchanged
in the core of a major American city, while around it the forces of change and evolution pressed in upon the magnificent decayed
buildings and the inhabitants and transients of this community. Within these streets I could observe, simultaneously, clues
to the city's past and hints to its future.
