Abstract:
Five handwritten letters from Frank William Bye to his mother Frances Bye dated March 25, 1866, January 27, 1867, January
16, 1868, October 28, 1868, and June 17, 1870. The first three were sent from Placerville, California, and the final two were
sent from San Francisco, California. The Placerville letters were written while Frank Bye was mining quartz, but he says in
each one that he either intends to visit home soon or to go to San Francisco. In the first San Francisco letter, he mentions
the October 21, 1868 Hayward fault earthquake which he heard about from the family he was visiting. Although he did not experience
it himself, he says that it "was rather a rough affair considering that it lasted only a few second." He later says that he
plans to travel farther south in California because he needs "a place to dispose of a stock of goods." He also notes that
"by next summer the Rail Road will be completed to the states I can then take a run over in five or six days so you may look
out for me when the Iron Horse gets across the desert." In all but the final letter, he mentions a "Draft" allowing his mother
to get money he is sending. The final letter is written on "Office of D.W. Earl" in San Francisco letterhead, and concerns
the steps necessary to "import tea direct from China & Japan to our House in Chicago" and start the "Sisson Wallace & Co.
Importers of China & Japan Teas." Envelopes included for all letters except the 1870 letter.
