Abstract:
Typed transcript (149 p.) of a doctor's narrative account of his overland journey from Memphis, Tennessee to the California
gold rush via the southern route of Fort Smith and Santa Fe and his return home a year and a half later by passenger ship
via Panama. Contains numerous details of his experiences including numerous stories of encounters and skirmishes with Native
American Indians, Mexicans, Chileans, gold miners, thieves, etc. Battle also comments on the various medical conditions he
encounters along the way and his role in treating them. Most of the narrative covers his travels to California with a small
portion at the end covering his return to Memphis.
