Title:
[Family photographs and snapshot album of Adelaide Lewis McMullen, daughter of General Edward Mann Lewis]
Creator/Contributor:
McMullen, Adelaide L., 1895-1984, creator, creator.
Abstract:
Chiefly snapshots, with some studio portraits, of friends and family of Adelaide Lewis. The majority of photographs are in
a snapshot album apparently compiled by Adelaide, and dating chiefly from 1908-1914. At this time the family lived at the
Presidio of Monterey, and then in Berkeley, Calif. Included are many pictures taken in the Pacific Grove and Monterey area,
and on excursions in Yosemite, Mendocino County, and other California rural camps, with a few at a summer retreat in Wisconsin.
A few pictures include Adelaide's father, Major (later General) Edward Mann Lewis, and her mother and younger brother Thomas.
Berkeley views of interest include the family's home at 3014 College Avenue, students in bleachers at Berkeley High School
(1911), the bleachers at a Berkeley track meet ("B.C.A.L.", 1912), a 1911 stadium view with the crowd forming the California
bear and a "C" (possibly with white hats rather than cards used in stadium card tricks), a photograph of a U.C. Freshman class
of 1916 warning sign by the sophomore class of 1915, a muddy football game of 1912 (presumably the Big Game with Stanford
known as the 1912 "mud bowl"), and student workers on "Labor Day" at Berkeley High School. The majority of photographs depict
leisure activities, outings, and dinners or parties with family and friends, many of whom are identified in captions. Studio
portraits include Adelaide Lewis and her children, her grandmother Harriet Palmer Balding, of Wisconsin, and unidentified
likely members of the Balding and Lewis families. There is also a series of photographs from the 1967 European trip and voyage
on the Queen Elizabeth made by Adelaide (then known as Nancy McMullen) and a friend.
