Contains sixty-six handwritten personal letters of Baptist missionary to California, Francis Edward Prevaux, and his wife,
Lydia Prevaux (nee Rowell), addressed to various other family members. Fifty-six of the letters are written by Francis Prevaux
and mostly addressed from Oakland and San Francisco, California to his parents in Amesbury, Massachusetts. Some of his letters
are addressed to his wife Lydia, and cousins. Some of his letters also have added notes written and signed by his wife, Lydia.
The letters contain details of their life in California and general news of the day including the gold rush. The earliest
letter of the collection, dated June 29, 1845, is addressed from Brown University where Francis Prevaux attended school. One
letter, dated June 29, 1850, also contains a detailed account of their voyage and trip to California via Panama with a brief
added note signed by Lydia. Also includes a handwritten transcript of the same letter, made circa 1940, by Sue Brown. The
latest letter, dated January 16, 1859, finds Prevaux trying his hand at ranching. Ten of the letters are written by Lydia
Prevaux to her parents, parents-in-law, sister, and cousins. Also contains a printed advertising circular, circa 1852, for
the third year operation of the San Francisco Academy where Prevaux was the principal.

Francis Edward Prevaux (1822-1860) was a Baptist missionary from Amesbury, Massachusetts. He graduated from Brown University
in 1846 and Newton Theological Institute in 1849. He was ordained a Baptist evangelist in 1850 and was sent to California
by the American Baptist Home Mission Society where he began preaching at Bethel Church, San Francisco, California and became
the principal of the San Francisco Academy. He remained in California until 1859 and died in Amesbury, Massachusetts in 1860.
San Francisco Academy was a private prepatory high school located at Jackson and Powell Streets. It had separate classes for
males and females and the course of study included Primary and Higher English, Latin, Spanish, French, Drawing, and Music.
