Abstract:
Chiefly snapshots documenting Benjamin's long career in the United States Navy, including both the First World War and Second
World War. Photographs document activities and scenes on various ships, including the U.S.S. Mongolia, U.S.S. Melville and
U.S.S. Hornet; numerous U.S. Navy personnel; pre-war Pearl Harbor; Panama Canal; various ports of call; and other naval subjects.
Also includes studio portraits of the Benjamin and Wise families, among others; Y.M.C.A. football scenes; a few photographs
pertaining to shipwrecks (including one of the Honda Point disaster of 1923). Also includes various official U.S. Navy papers
pertaining to Benjamin's service, and a group of correspondence and other personal papers pertaining to a Benjamin; Alfred
Colwell, a relative of Francis; and Patrick Murray, Roswell Skeel, James L. Clark, George D. McLean, all of Washington state,
whose relationships are undetermined. Also includes a U.S. Navy publication pertaining to the first war cruise (1943-1945)
of the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Hornet, and a 1932 map of the Elizabeth Lake quadrangle (in B folder).
